A newly constructed 660-meter bridge, consisting of two lanes, will significantly improve travel time for commuters heading from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road,
reducing the peak hour journey from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes. The bridge has a capacity to handle 3,200 vehicles per hour.
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract for the Garn Al Sabkha Street Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project, aimed at constructing four bridges spanning 3,000 meters, capable of accommodating 17,600 vehicles per hour.
The project, with a budget of Dh374 million, is in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council. It aims to cater to the evolving profile of Dubai, meet the needs of urban development, and address the growth in population.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, stated, "This project is part of a larger initiative to enhance the Garn Al Sabkha Street Corridor, connecting Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads. Its objective is to ensure smooth traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, and Al Asayel Street."
Upon completion, the project will reduce travel distance and time by 40% for those traveling from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in the direction of Al Qusais and Sharjah. Additionally, journey time will be reduced by 70% for vehicles traveling from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Road in the direction of Jebel Ali Port, from 21 minutes to seven minutes, stated Al Tayer.
A 960-meter bridge is being constructed at the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street. This two-lane bridge can handle 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, ensuring smooth traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Furthermore, a 660-meter bridge consisting of two lanes will serve traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street, heading westwards to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in the direction of Al Qusais and Sharjah, with a capacity to handle 3,200 vehicles per hour, explained Al Tayer.
